REMEMBRANCE
This poem is about my son. It was written a decade ago. I am extremely lucky that I have seen him twice in the intervening years. Those brief glimpses into his life were truly wonderful. The box of this poem is now a very dusty box; I know so little about my son’s life over the last ten years that I cannot really claim to know him anymore which makes me sad. But I have heard he is happy and I do know what country he lives in and that is something. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if he did arrive at my house. I would hope we would have a glad hug but sometimes I worry I would just burst into tears.
REMEMBRANCE.
I pack you away in this clear plastic box
Where the mementos go
Where the memories are kept.
I can take you out on request
And unleash you on a world
That I am frightened to inhabit.
I can take you out;
Late evenings are best.
You’ll earn me a soft eyed hug.
I can pack you away in your box
And dread the day
I see you on my doorstep
And the box melts
And the sun flares in my heart.
